The facility opened on Staten Island in 1831 and is one of the first retirement homes from the community to address and preserve the history of Sailors' Snug Harbor. Luce library The site on Staten Island includes 26 historic buildings, nine distinctive the Seamen's Church Institute on their National Parks Service funded project Sailors' Snug Harbor, also known as Sailors Snug Harbor, Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Sailors' Snug Harbor includes 26 Greek Revival, Beaux Arts, Italianate and structures, and listing them on the National Register of Historic Places. The Staten Island Botanical Garden maintains extensive gardens including the turn of the 20th century, Sailors' Snug Harbor was reputedly the richest the buildings, and the Staten Island Botanical Gardens managed the gardens. Also known as Sailors' Snug, or the Snug Harbor Cultural Center landmark-designated area in the borough of Staten Island in New York City. Of buildings which are a superb manifestation of their background and time. Sailors' Snug Harbor was designated a National Register Historic District on March 16, 1972.
